{"id":708,"date":"2016-12-08T12:16:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-08T12:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sakraplatser.abe.kth.se\/?page_id=708"},"modified":"2016-12-08T12:16:01","modified_gmt":"2016-12-08T12:16:01","slug":"fear-and-the-role-of-environment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpmu-bis.sys.kth.se\/safeplaces\/fear-and-the-role-of-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Fear and the Role of Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fear (of crime) is a reflection of what one sees and perceives with one\u2019s senses in settings and environments one spends time. <strong><em>Safeplaces network <\/em><\/strong>is particularly interested in devoting time to understand mechanisms linking crime and visible deterioration of a place to fear. We know that signs that \u2018nobody is in control\u2019 \u2013 abandoned buildings, litter, vandalism, and loitering \u2013 are thought to trigger fear of crime and are indicators of more serious crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, fear can also be a function of an individual\u2019s emotional reactions to a place and memories and associations that a place brings to the surface. Recent studies show that fear may also result from the overall sense of change that a place is undergoing. New incomers may fear as they lack knowledge and familiarity of the area.\u00a0 Research has shown that differences between residents and incomers can be maximized by both groups, giving expression to us-them feelings (<em>othering<\/em>), initiated by fear of unknown. The truth is that fear goes beyond the conditions of buildings and streets.
